The Historical Museum of the Grenadiers of Sardinia is located in Piazza Santa Croce in Gerusalemme in Rome.
The museum is divided into 15 rooms that contain weapons from various sources, both Italian and foreign, as well as photographic material relating to the Great War, the reasons for the assignments of the gold medals for military valor conferred to the grenadiers, floor plans of the places where they fought, flags and personal items donated by the grenadiers themselves or their families. Also on the walls are engraved in golden letters the names of 8,500 grenadiers fallen in all wars.
The itinerary develops illustrating the most significant periods in the history of military body, starting from its founding in 1659 until 1870. It continues in the historical memories of the colonial wars of Eritrea (1896) and Libya (1911-1912), while the armory preserved specimens of weapons seized from the enemy during the First World War and memorabilia of the campaigns of Albania, Greece and Yugoslavia.
The tour continues in the private room at the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and Yugoslavia (1941-1943) and in that it preserves the memory of the grenadiers of the participation in the Resistance.
On the first floor and the hall of honor dedicated to the kings of the House of Savoy, supporters of the grenadiers of the body since its establishment. Two rooms dedicated to the Italo-Ethiopian war, a room dedicated to Lieutenant Guido Zanetti and one reserved for war flags of the body complete the museum.
The idea to collect all the historical artifacts of the grenadiers of Sardinia in 1899 was the commander of the regiment According Vandero, when the unit was stationed in Piacenza. The following year Colonel Caesar Confalonieri had the same idea and the realization in the new Parma. With the transfer of the brigade in Rome, the two collections were reunited March 5, 1903 in several rooms of the barracks Ferdinand of Savoy at the Stazione Termini. The initiative received a lot of support now, thanks to the support of the Italian rulers of the time.
Already in 1912, due to the amount of materials collected, it was deemed appropriate to find new accommodation for the museum and is suggested as the new home the barracks Umberto I in Piazza Santa Croce in Gerusalemme.
Since 1986, following the decree of the President of the Republic, the museum and managed directly by the Ministry of Defense and has assumed the status of Department of Mechanized Brigade "Grenadiers of Sardinia"
